It's a Sketchy Challenge - Dec 2012

Last night, I posted the December sketch in the It's a Sketchy Challenge gallery:

Here's my layout:

Supplies used: Bazzill Basics cardstock; Sassafras Lass and American Crafts patterned papers; Sassafras Lass die cuts; Marvy Uchida, Martha Stewart Crafts and EK Success punches; QuicKutz alpha dies; Me and My Big Ideas rhinestones, Scrapbook Adhesives foam adhesive; PaperMate Flair marker; unknown washi tape.

Fairly simple design and easy to execute, this layout was meant to capture those chubby cheeks and not much else, hence the lack of journaling. I punched various shapes out of patterned papers and other die cuts for the flower centres and used dimensional foam for depth.

I also created a card inspired by this sketch but will share that later in the week...

Now head over to the Sketchy gallery and get inspired to create your own layout!  You can use it as is or as a springboard for your project - the choice is yours!

{RAK ALERT!}
If you play along with the sketch this month, upload your layout in the gallery into the December Sketch section here, and then link up on this post to that layout, using Linky Tools below, by 11:59pm on December 31, 2012.

Not only do you have a chance to be published in an upcoming issue*,  but on January 1st, 2013, I will randomly draw a winner from the comments here of those who participated for a prize!  Prize details to follow at a later date...

* For a chance to be published, your layout must be uploaded in the Sketchy gallery for December, and must contain at least one Canadian manufacturer, which must be listed in the description of your upload.

I've extended the November sketch deadline until tonight at 11:59pm so be sure to add a link to your project in the Sketchy gallery to this post.  The winner will be announced tomorrow!

Cheers,

P/S: Don't forget about the other challenge on my blog for a chance to win a Cocoa Daisy kit:
Leave Your Legacy Winter 2012/13 issue: What You Fear Most (deadline: Feb 28, 2013)

Leave Your Legacy: What You Fear Most (Winter 2013)

So excited to share my second Leave Your Legacy (LYL) article published in the Winter 2012/13 issue!  Well, you'll have to purchase the magazine to read the article, but I will share my layout and the challenge here!

With each issue, I will challenge our readers to participate.  (To learn more about the LYL articles and challenges, please visit my LYL page for more info)  Each quarter, I will share my layout and will invite you to link up your layouts completed for this challenge here to share with everyone.  I'm even going to throw in a prize for each challenge!

This month, I am giving away a sold out kit from Cocoa Daisy, Tea & Cupcakes:

Isn't it positively yummy?!  Click here for a list of contents.

For this issue, the topic is What You Fear Most.  This topic came about after Gary's heart attack, when I realized what I feared most.  Here's my layout:

Supplies used:  Canadian Scrapbooker Super Stock; Bo Bunny patterned paper; Just Cre8 stamps (Love Gives You Wings); Ranger embossing powder; Spectrum Noir markers; K&Company, Recollections and unknown washi tape; American Craft letter stickers; Prima Marketing bling and flowers; The Twinery twine; miscellaneous buttons and flowers from my stash.

Another photoless LYL layout for me (well, the last one had a photo, but it was just a stock photo).  I am thinking about this just now as I'm blogging and realize that because my focus is to tell the story more than leave an image, what you SEE when I create this layout is not as important as what you READ.

Journaling reads:
Afraid of spiders?  Sure, but when I really stop to think about it now, it's not so much a fear (come on, what can they actually DO to me?) but instead, a genuine dislike, they-give-me-the-heebie-jeebies sort of thing.
But fear?  Looking back,  I'd be hard pressed to name something that actually scared me when I was younger.  I was adventurous, a daredevil - I shudder to think of the things that we did when I was in university and college.
It wasn't until I had so much to lose that I actually became fearful.  Within weeks of dating Gary, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.  He's just that kind of guy.  I suddenly couldn't imagine life without him.
And once we had kids, it seemed even more important to have him around.  He is truly my better half - in every sense of the word.  A wonderful father, he's patient and kind and funny - and he is THE ultimate Tickle Monster!
So when Gary suffered a myocardial infarction (or heart attack, for those who have not been touched by this) at the young age of 42, it suddenly became clear what my REAL fear was... I was afraid of my kids having to grow up without the guidance and support of one or both of their parents.
It definitely motivated both of us to eat cleaner, move more and take better care of ourselves.  It was more important than ever now to instill healthy habits in the kids so that this is one fear about which they won't have to worry.

There is some distressing going on with this page - a tear in the corner to show some happy tape, peeping through (note the heart - a play on the cardiac theme, if you will...), as well as the edges of the journaling block and layout itself:

For maximum contrast, I matted the washi tape on Super Stock first, before adhering to the layout.

I also taped a scrap piece of Super Stock, then stamped and embossed the open heart.

The wings and banner were stamped onto Super Stock and embossed as well.  I then used my Spectrum Noir markers to colour in the wings.  I love that the embossing keeps me within the lines! Makes colouring A LOT faster... :)

Spectrum Markers used:  BP3, BP4, BP7

Please share your LYL layout or project with us below for a chance to win (I will add mine just as an example) - I'd love to see what you create!  Challenge runs from now until Feb. 28th, 2013. Please feel free to email me at sue[AT]canadianscrapbooker[DOT]com, if you have any questions about linking your project.

Cheers,
